My Story
Hi my name is Amaya McBride. I created this organization because I was born a NICU baby. If you don't know what a NICU baby is, it is babies who are born early, have health problems, or a difficult birth. NICU stands for "neonatal intensive care unit." These babies then go to the hospital's NICU. There they are cared and watched by Neonatal nurses and doctors. Depending on the baby's condition depends on how long they stay in the NICU hospital. I was born November 17, 2004 weighing 3 pounds and 15 ounces. My mother had to deliver me early because I had no amniotic fluid, thus causing the umbilical cord to be wrapped around my neck. It was a scary experience for my parents and they weren't sure when I would be released to leave the NICU. I was cared for in the NICU for two weeks by some beautiful nurses. They helped me overcome jaundice and a lack of sucking reflex. Once I was finally released to go home, I had to get caffeine shots and wear a breathing machine all day for months. This ensured I was properly breathing and would notify my parents if I stopped breathing. Luckily for me, as well as many other NICU babies, I was a fighter and never gave up. Today I stand strong and continue to amaze many people of whom I come into contact with. I get excited when I learn of a fellow NICU baby because I know they two possess greatness! This page was created to give hope to new parents with their NICU babies. I hope you enjoy!
